Numerical Modelling of Energy Pile by Different Constitutive Models

ABSTRACT: Energy pile is an innovative technology which combined foundation pile with heat pumps. Through this integration, foundation pile can then serve as cooling and heating system, in summer and winter, respectively. During energy pile operation, the pile is subjected to heating and cooling cycles. The thermal cycles induce thermal-induced settlement, and predicting this settlement is a major challenge. As the thermal loading of energy pile is cyclic in nature, constitutive model capable of modelling cyclic hysteresis is necessary. In this paper, a model energy pile embedded in saturated sand and subjected to 5 thermal cycles are back-analyzed using hardening soil with small strain stiffness model. To highlight the importance of modelling cyclic hysteresis, two constitutive models which cannot model the cyclic hysteresis, i.e. hardening soil model and Mohr Coulomb model are used to back analyse the same test. Results show that hardening soil with small strain stiffness model can model the test reasonably well, while hardening soil and Mohr coulomb model severely underestimate the thermal-induced settlement.

Expanded Polystyrene for Road Embankment on Soft Clay

ABSTRACT: Instability and  intolerable deformation always be the problems in constructing high embankment over soft/ loose soils. The prime cause of the problems is the load exerted by the self-weight of the embankment fill itself. Therefore, whenever possible, the use of lightweight materials, such as Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam, for the embankment fill will certainly be one of the best solution. This technique has been implemented in the Scandinavian countries. Seeing that it may also be implemented in our country, Indonesia, this paper tries to introduce the engineering characteristics of the EPS foam, as obtained from manufacturer, together with its design aspects.

TUNNELING INDUCED GROUND MOVEMENT AND SOIL STRUCTURE INTERACTIONS

ABSTRACT

Tunneling technique is normally a primary option that can’t be avoided in building a Mass Rapid Transport System in a heavily populated metropolitan city. In this case, to avoid any unwanted effect to the surrounding structures and public utilities, the ground movement and the soil structure interaction analysis become important factors to consider. This paper elaborates the author experiences in analyzing such a case, both by employing available empirical formulas and by using a sophisticated finite element analysis.
