New Seismic Hazard Maps for Design of Earthquake Resistance Buildings and Infrastructures in Indonesia

Prof Masyhur Irsyam

Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia

Revision of current Indonesian Seismic Hazard Map contained in Indonesian Earthquake Resistant Building Code SNI 03-1726-2002 was required to better reflect the potential larger earthquake disasters faced by the nation predictably in the future. Development of new seismic hazard maps for design of earthquake resistance buildings and infrastructures in Indonesia was then conducted by the Team for Revision of Seismic Hazard Maps of Indonesia. The maps ware developed based on the total probability theorem and deterministic approach by using three-dimensional seismic source model and by considering latest geological and seismological data.

Seismic sources were modeled by subduction, fault, and background zones by considering recurrence model that includes truncated exponential model, pure characteristic model, and both models. Several well-known attenuation functions were selected in accordance with the mechanism of seismic source including the Next Generation Attenuation(NGA). Logic tree was applied to account for epistemic uncertainty considering recurrence model, maximum magnitude, and several attenuation functions.

Several hazard levels were analyzed to represent 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2500, 10000 years and deterministic earthquake ground motions at base rock of Indonesia. Peak ground acceleration (PGA) contour maps for those hazard levels and additional maps were produced during this study. These additional maps represent short period (0.2 s) and 1.0 s spectra values for each level. Risk-Adjusted Maximum Considered Earthquake (MCER) and Maximum Considered Earthquake Geometric Mean (MCEG) PGA were also produced for building design.

Testimonial from Geotechnical Engineer

Fenny Septiastuti (Wiratman and Associates) :

Saya kemarin sabtu, 27 Okt 2012, telah mengikuti kelas PLAXIS-nya pak Gouw, ditambah ikut kelas Mekanika Tanahnya Pak Gouw juga. Mantab pokoknya.
Jadi rada nyesel, dulu waktu saya masih kuliah kok gak bener-bener belajarnya, jadinya banyak yang kelewat.

Keledai, Ayah dan Anak

Written by Gouw Tjie Liong, Ir., M.Eng, ChFC, PhD. Posted in General, Life

Sebuah cerita:
