Gouw Tjie Liong

Mr. Gouw is a certified Professional Geotechnical Engineer. He has been working in the field of Geotechnical Engineering since 1984. His expertise covering geotechnical investigation, soil intrumentation, deep foundation and excavation for high rise buildings, pile load testing (Static and PDA), pile integrity testing (PIT), sonic logging test, vibration monitoring, slope stability, ground anchors, pumping test, dewatering, micropiles, tunnelling and ground improvement works, e.g. dynamic compaction, vertical drain, vibro-compaction, geosynthetic and grouting. The jobs cover more than 180 projects in Indonesia, Singapore and Srilanka. He has a great passion in the teaching and disseminating of geotechnical engineering knowledge. He serves as lecturer since late 1984. Currently, he serves as a senior lecturer at Bina Nusantara University, Jakarta, Indonesia. He also conduct regular geotechnical training for engineers. He also chaired the Indonesian Chapter of International Geosynthetics Society since 2006. He has published 61 papers and 22 technical notes.

IMPORTANCE OF ELONGATION FACTOR in Determining GEOSYNTHETICS STIFFNESS for Finite Element Calculation

Abstract: The application of geosynthetics for reinforced earth, also known as mechanically stabilized earth, is gaining popularity in Indonesia. At the same time, many engineers have started using geotechnical finite element software in designing the geosynthetics reinforced earth. Unfortunately, many of them still do not know the importance of elongation factor in determination of the geosynthetics stiffness to be input into the finite element calculation. Some engineers even said that elongation of the geosynthetics need not be considered in selecting the right geosynthetics material, only the breaking strength and the type of geosynthetics need to be considered. Such misconception can lead to bad performance or even failure of the geosynthetics reinforced earth. This paper elaborates the importance of the elongation factor and the correct procedure in determining the stiffness of geosynthetics materials for finite element software input.

The key of learning is to empty ourself!

Before we learn something, if we really want to learn, and to benefit from what a person or mother nature tell us is to behave like what I have learned so far, that is: “What I have learned is a cup full of coffee has to be emptied before one can fill it with a fresh water. Therefore, the only way to learn something is to empty one’s mind first, otherwise nothing can be learned.”
