PERFORMANCE OF MICROPILES SUBJECTED TO REPETITIVE LOAD AND UNLOAD CYCLES OF 1500KN LOAD

ABSTRACT: Since early 1980s cast in place micropiles have been implemented in various part of Indonesia. Its main application is to provide support for machine foundation with limited headroom inside a factory, to strengthen a building foundation by underpinning, or to support a structure under a special site condition where the use of traditional driven piles or bored piles was not possible. Three types of cast-in-place micropiles have been implemented elsewhere, i.e. non grouted, globally grouted, and repetitive grouted micropiles. This paper describes the design, construction and performance of Repetitive Grouted Micropiles (RGMs) subjected to loading and unloading cycles of 1500 kN load. The RGMs, which served as a gantry crane foundation, were designed to bear 1000 kN working load each. To check the capacity and the load-unload behavior of the piles, 6 out of 195 used piles were subjected to 20 cycles of loading-unloading between zero and 1500 kN test-load. One unused pile was constructed and loaded to failure. It was found that the piles performed satisfactorily.

THE APPLICATION OF GROUND IMPROVEMENT TECHNIQUES IN INDONESIA

ABSTRACT: Ground improvement technologies have played an important role in mitigating both settlement problem of highly compressible soft marine clay and liquefaction potential of loose sandy soils that lie along the coastal regions in Indonesia. This paper elaborates the authors’ experiences in applying ground improvement technologies in various part of Indonesia. Case studies on conventional precompression with vertical drain, vacuum preloading, dynamic compaction, and vibro-compaction are presented. Finally, the handling of problematic shale formation is also discussed.

Soil Improvement by Vacuum Preloading for a Power Plant Project in Vietnam

ABSTRACT: A power plant project in South Vietnam was to be constructed on 16-30m depth very soft muddy clay layer. The project covered an area of 25.3 hectare. The very soft clay layer had a natural water content of around 58%, initial void ratio 1.594, and compression index 0.615. Vacuum preloading with an average PVD length of 26m and vacuum pressure of more than 80 kPa, was employed to improve the soft soil. The vacuum degree, surface and subsoil settlement, pore water pressure and lateral displacement were carefully monitored during the preloading period. After the vacuum preloading period of 117 – 150 days, ground surface settlement of 1.254-1.655m correspond to a degree of consolidation over 90% was achieved. The maximum lateral displacement was176mm in the direction towards the improved area. The after treatment Vane Shear Test yields undrained shear strength, Su, is 40 ~ 70 kPa.
